Gardening at Hart Heritage Assisted Living
At Hart Heritage Assisted Living, we provide a wide variety of activities to keep our residents active and entertained. One of these is our garden club, which meets on a regular basis for digging in the dirt, weeding and the best part – harvesting!
Gardening has many health and therapeutic benefits for seniors – and not just those in assisted living. Creating an edible garden with raised beds for easy access, helps keep seniors active and healthy.
Some of the benefits include:
- Exercise – increases level of activity and promotes stretching to increase flexibility
- Encourages use of motor skills – walking, reaching, bending, grasping
- Improves endurance and strength
- Reduces stress and promotes relaxation
- Provides mental stimulation
- Provides nutritious, home-grown produce
- Getting outdoors to breath in fresh air
Our garden this year includes tomatoes, cucumbers, basil and mint, among other things. Nothing beats the taste of garden fresh produce!
All of our walkways and paths at Hart Heritage Assisted Living are flat and non-slip, so working in the garden is safe. We work in the garden in the early morning to avoid the full sun, and encourage residents to apply sunscreen. One of our activity staff is with the residents at all times to assist as needed, and ensure that each activity is safe and stimulating for our residents.
If you’re considering moving yourself or a loved one into an assisted living facility close to Bel Air, we invite you to tour both of our Hart Heritage Assisted Living facilities, in Street and Forest Hill.
